Question 1

How many people died in the 2026 Nepal floods?

Accepted Answer

NDRRMA put the death toll at 1,451 as of 20 September 2026. 1,030 bodies have been temporarily buried after procedure and the Ministry of Health reports that only about 4% have been formally identified, with DNA testing and facial photographs in use. The last district breakdown published put Chitwan highest (340), followed by Nawalparasi East (228), Nawalparasi West (178), Nuwakot (102), Gorkha (68), Dhading (58) and Tanahun (36); that split lags the national total, which continues to rise as the search widens downstream.

Question 2

How many people are missing in the Nepal floods?

Accepted Answer

5,786 people remain missing as of 20 September 2026. Rasuwa accounts for 865, Nuwakot 115 and Makwanpur 65. The missing include 900 workers from 12 hydropower projects (around 500 of them believed trapped in flooded tunnels), 636 foreign nationals from 39 countries, an estimated 300 trade and transport workers, and 85 security personnel.

Question 3

What caused the 2026 Nepal flood?

Accepted Answer

A glacier collapsed near Langtang Lirung inside Nepal, about 64 km north of Kathmandu, on the morning of 26 August 2026, sending a catastrophic flash flood down the Bhote Koshi gorge into Rasuwa district. The surge travelled roughly 20 km in about seven minutes at speeds near 180 km/h. Satellite imagery and USGS seismic analysis confirm a glacier collapse, not an earthquake: the Ms 5.2 signal recorded at 08:37 NPT was generated by the collapse itself.

Question 4

Which highways are closed in Nepal right now?

Accepted Answer

As of early October 2026, with the monsoon withdrawing, there is no active nationwide road emergency in force. Conditions are calmer than during the monsoon, but hill highways still need care after the August flood — some sections can face landslide clearance and intermittent closures, so always confirm your specific route with the local traffic office (dial 103) before long hill journeys. The Betrawati–Rasuwagadhi road, destroyed by the flood, remains under reconstruction. See the Highway Updates page for the live section-by-section status.

Question 5

How can I donate to Nepal flood relief?

Accepted Answer

Donate through the official Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund using its published bank accounts, Fonepay QR codes, or the Government of Nepal online portal operated via NCHL. The fund passed Rs 13.23 billion (about US$86.69 million) by 11 September 2026, most of it raised by QR code in donations of under Rs 100. Details are on the Relief Fund page.

Question 6

How many people have been rescued in the Nepal floods?

Accepted Answer

Nepali officials put the total rescued at 13,784 as of 20 September 2026, including 324 foreign nationals; 5,006 of them are individually named in the public NDRRMA tracing registry. The Prime Minister had given Parliament a figure of 11,993 on 2 September. 21,400+ security personnel are deployed — 9,300 Nepali Army, 7,912 Nepal Police and 4,203 Armed Police Force.
